Cavaretta's Italian Groceries

Cavaretta's Italian Groceries
22045 Sherman Way
Canoga Park
818-340-6626

Until last year, I've never had an Italian cold cut sandwich. I knew what mortadella, capacolla, and salame were but they didn't appeal to me in a sandwich. But, one day I figured they all sandwich meat, so I decided to give them a try. My first version of an Italian cold cut sandwich was at Eastside Market Italian Deli, it maybe my favorite place for an Italian cold cut sandwich. I also like the sandwich from Capri Deli & Kitchen. I found out I really liked an Italian cold cut sandwich. So, now when I go to any Italian deli, I look will order an Italian cold cut sandwich.

I read that Cavaretta's Italian Groceries serves up some great sandwiches, maybe the best in the Valley, so I dropped in. Cavaretta's opened in 1959 and has always gotten good reviews for their sandwiches.

Large Italian, mortadella, cotto salame, Italian salame, provolone cheese, $7.45. Every Italian deli has their version of the Italian cold cut sandwich. Some put capacola, others will include turkey, and others will have ham on their sandwich. Well, Cavaretta's is the first to have two different types of salame, cotto and Italian.

I liked the Cavaretta's version of an Italian cold cut sandwich. The meats were very fresh. I opened up the sandwich to see if I could tell the difference between the two salames, but they looked the same to me. The mayo, lettuce and tomatoes were all very fresh and cold, they were stored properly, until some other places! The Italian roll had a nice, soft chewy texture and good crust. While the sandwich was good, it wasn't outstanding and certainly not the best Italian cold cut sandwich I've had.

Service is good. The guy who made my sandwich was nice and made the sandwich quickly.

I was impressed with Cavaretta's Italian Groceries, but I wouldn't rush back to get an Italian cold cut sandwich. It maybe the best in the Valley, but really, how much competition is there? If you live in the area, this is a great choice, I just wouldn't make a special trip for it.

DZ Akin's

DZ Akin's
6930 Alvarado Rd
San Diego
619-265-0218

I enjoy going to the classic deli. I love the atmosphere, the food, the rich cultural significance of a deli. I've been to my share of delis in the LA area. So, on my latest trip to San Diego, I wanted to go back to the only deli that I know of and have been to in San Diego; DZ Akin's. A friend, who lives in San Diego, told me that DZ Akin's became popular because a local news reporter loves the place. In fact they even named a sandwich after him, Ted Leitner-corned beef, pastrami, and American cheese on rye.

DZ Akin's is located off the 8 freeway in a small strip mall. You enter at the bakery and deli counter, then walk through the long dining area. It can get very crowded, I've waited 20 minutes for a table before.

I got the pastrami and corned beef on rye, $12.95. While the sandwich was piled high with meat, the meat quality wasn't that good. There were a lot of fat and gristle on the meat. I know corned beef and pastrami are made from the brisket cut, a very fatty and full of connective tissue, cut of meat. But, most delis trim off a lot of the fat. I can say with almost 100% certainty, that DZ Akin's does not make their own meats. The meats are bought from a source. In other words, I can get a pound of pastrami and corned beef for the deli counter and make my own sandwich, for much less.

The rye bread wasn't anything special, I could have gotten better bread at the local market.

Service was good. I wasn't really lacking for anything, the server was nice, friendly, and helpful. I asked about their plantation soup, and she had the ingredients written on her order book. To me that's impressive. Instead of saying, I don't know or I'll have to ask, all she did was look in her book and gave me the answer. A very well trained and friendly staff.

I won't go back to DZ Akin's again. The food is just ok and like I said, I could get better meats and bread for much cheaper at most deli counters.

Capri Deli & Kitchen

Capri Deli & Kitchen
713 E San Bernardino Rd
Covina
626-331-0233

As you can tell by the picture, Capri has been around since 1954. I've been craving a good sandwich and I decided to go to Capri.

I got a large (12") cold cut combo sandwich, $7.39, ham, mortadella, salami, coppocollo, prosciuttini, and provolone cheese. Yes, that's right five meats and cheese on a sandwich. The sandwiches come with lettuce, tomato and oil, but I had them replace the oil, with mayo. This was a great sandwich with tons of good quality cold cuts and fresh lettuce and tomatoes. The bread is an Italian roll, that was soft and chewy, with good texture.

The only thing I found interesting is, the way they put the sandwich into two different bags. I thought they would wrap the entire sandwich in butcher paper, but it was split in half and put into two different bags.

But, that wasn't that big of a deal, the sandwich was great.

I wanted a hot sandwich, so I ordered the chicken parmesan sandwich, $6.45, breaded chicken patty, marinara sauce, and provolone cheese. I wasn't impressed with this at all. The chicken was tough, chewy and seemed as they had been in the oven for too long. There wasn't a lot of marinara sauce on the sandwich, but they give you a portion, on the side. The marinara sauce was ok, though a bit bland.

Service was OK. The line during lunch is long, but moves quickly. They have a lot of people making sandwiches. The young girl, who made my sandwich is ok, not overly friendly, just kinda of going through the motions. She wasn't bad, but she wasn't great, either.

I would go back to Capri again, but I wouldn't order the chicken parmesan sandwich again.

European Deli and Bakery-Closed

European Deli and Bakery 722 S. Grand Ave. Glendora 626-914-3959 After going to Spaghetti Eddie's, I noticed European Deli and Bakery and decided to give them a try, because I was craving a polish sausage. European Deli isn't really a sit down restaurant, but more of a deli/market that has a few tables. This reminded me of Mattern Sausage and Meats, but European Deli is more Polish than German, like Mattern, but they do have a large selection of Eastern European cold cuts and foods. But I did find it weird they sold some sausage made/sold by Mattern!! So I got the polish sausage plate, with hot potato salad, sauerkraut, and bread, $8.99. I loved this. The hot potato salad was unique because I'm used to cold potato salad. But this was great. Very tender, well seasoned potatoes. The sauerkraut was awesome, finely cut pieces of cabbage that wasn't too tangy, But what I really liked was the polish sausage. Like the sign outside said the sausages are made in Chicago and fresh. I bought a package of sausage that was produced about five days before, in Chicago, that's fresh!! The sausage is pork with a good blend of spices. A wonderful natural casing!! Service is OK. They are a bit slow but friendly. It was very busy when I was there, with people coming in for deli meats and sausage. This reminds me, I need to go back to Polka, for some good Polish food!! I would go back to European Deli and Bakery anytime. The next time I may try a sandwich.

Corsica Italian Delicatessen

Corsica Italian Delicatessen
8111 Foothill Blvd
Sunland
818-352-7213

The San Fernando Valley is an interesting place. Many people, outside of California, think "cities" like Northridge, Van Nuys, and Sunland are actual cities. But they are really "communities" Those communities are part of the city of Los Angeles.

But each of these communities, each have their own unique flavor and but one thing they have in common is that, they are a bunch of NIMBY's.

So, while I understand Sunland isn't a "city" it is a community that I haven't reviewed a restaurant. So I was going to be in the area for lunch and looked for some sandwich places. I found Corsica Italian Delicatessen and wanted to give them a try.

The first thing I noticed about Corsica, is it's huge menu. They have so many sandwich choices. I finally decided to get a Clark's Special, $8.99; cappocolla, pastrami, and swiss cheese, with mayo, lettuce and tomatoes on french roll. The sandwich usually comes with hot pepper cheese but I don't like hot pepper cheese.

There was about a quarter pound of meats on the sandwich. But both the cappocolla and pastrami weren't anything special. They were standard lunch meat from any supermarket deli section. They were ok, but nothing outstanding and not worth the high price.

But the french roll was soft, with a very chewy texture, almost like a Philly cheesesteak roll. Maybe the best part of the sandwich.

Service was very good. The lady who took my order was very nice, if a bit talkative. She told me about the area and the fact that Corsica has been around for about 40 years.

I wasn't impressed with Corsica and I wouldn't go back for their sandwiches. High prices for ok quality meats, isn't worth it.

Junior's Restaurant/Deli-Closed

Junior's Restaurant/Deli
2379 Westwood Blvd
Los Angeles
310-475-5771

I heard about Junior's Restaurant/Deli a few months back and decided to give them a try. My favorite deli in LA, is Canter's, so Junior's had a lot to live up to.

I ordered the David Deli Platter, $13.95, corned beef, pastrami, swiss cheese, and rye bread on a platter, because I didn't see a corned beef and pastrami combo sandwich. But I figured they were using the same corned beef and pastrami, as they do on their sandwich, so I couldn't lose. I did like both the corned beef and pastrami. Both were tender, flavorful and didn't have much fat!! Junior's trims the fat, where other deli's serve you a fat filled sandwich.

The rye bread was a bit bland, I want to taste the fennel seed. The swiss cheese was very good, light, nutty flavor.

Service was great. I sat at the counter and the server was annoying and wonderful. I didn't lack for anything and she refilled my drink without asking. She was great. She could dish it out and take it. She was getting on me when I asked for a box, saying I should clean my plate. So I got on her, when put my leftovers in the box, and she took the plate; I told her I wasn't done yet. Then I smiled. She smiled. She asked how everything. I said the food was great but, just as I was going to say, service needs improvement, she said service was annoying!!! It was great. The server's name is Anne and she is just awesome.

I would go back to Junior's anytime. I love this place. Has it replaced Canter's, as my favorite? Let's just say, Junior's is 1B.

Eastside Market Italian Deli

Eastside Market Italian Deli
1013 Alpine St
Los Angeles, CA 90012
213-250-2464

The first time I heard about Eastside Market, was when they catered a Christmas dinner. I was pretty impressed with their chicken and lemon capers and their pasta dishes. Later, when I read more about Eastside Market, I found they had; been in business since 1929 and had some good sandwiches. So I decided to give them a try.

The first thing you'll notice about Eastside Market, during a weekday lunch time, is the amount of cops and city of LA, employees. I've never seen so many badges!! If you got a complaint with the city of LA, go to Eastside Market and you may find the person who can help you.

#9, cold cut combo with cheese, $7.10. Turkey, salami, mortadella, capicollo, and ham with provolone cheese, mayo, lettuce and tomato, on Italian roll. I loved this sandwich. Being an Italian deli, I was a bit surprised they didn't put Italian dressing and olive oil on sandwiches. But I hate that stuff on a sandwich, so it didn't matter. But overall a very good quality cold cuts, fresh veggies, on a nice firm Italian roll. The amount of meat and the quality of the meat, makes this sandwich a steal.

#7, roast beef, pastrami, and cheese, topped with a red peppers sauce, $7.10. This is their most popular sandwich. The sandwich is more like a french dip, because this is a messy sandwich. The roast beef and pastrami are soaking in natural juices, then stacked onto the roll with the pepper sauce. But this isn't too soggy because the Italian roll is firm and absorbs the juices and pepper sauce very well. There is a ton of roast beef and pastrami stacked on this sandwich. The roast beef is a bit chewy, but I like it. The pastrami has a very nice texture and flavor. This was a huge sandwich and well worth the price.

Service. Don't be scared off by the lines, they move quickly because 4-5 people are making sandwiches for you. The guy who served me was pretty quick. But he had major attitude when he had to repeat my order. I mean it's crowded as hell, the place is noisy and he is barely talking above a whisper. Yeah, I'm suppose to be able to hear you over that. Another guy is the cashier and he was nice and helpful.
There is only street parking but no meters, a benefits of Eastside Deli being a city worker's favorite?

I would go back to Eastside Deli any time. I loved the sandwiches and the price, is a steal. Eastside is so much better than the last Italian deli I went to, Angelo's Italian Deli.

Magee's Kitchen

Magee's Kitchen
6333 W. 3rd St
Stall #624
Los Angeles
323-938-4127

One of the first times, I ever went to the LA Farmer's Market, I went to Magee's Kitchen and had a corned beef sandwich. Since that first time I went to the Farmer's Market, I have been to four other restaurants/stands at the Farmer's Market; Patsy D'Amore's, Gumbo Pot, Deano's Pizza, Bryan's Pit BBQ.

I figured since I was in the area, I should give Magee's another try.

I got the corned beef sanwich, $8.75, with mustard, on rye bread. You can get horseradish on the sandwich, I asked for it on the side. I know corned beef is from the very fatty, brisket cut, and fat adds flavor to meats. But this corned beef was way too fatty, use the fat to flavor the meat but cut the fat off when serving the corned beef.

Anyways the corned beef, was pretty moist, tender and flavorful. But just to much fat. I cut out most of the fat, and I bet I cut about 10% of the weight of the sandwich. The rye bread was pretty standard, nothing special.

Service was pretty good. The girl taking my order was nice and friendly. She tried to suggest adding sides to the sandwich, but I declined. I didn't mind how she asked, in a nice friendly way, I wish other servers would be as nice, not pushy.

I wouldn't go back to Magee's Kitchen. It wasn't anything outstanding. You're better off, going to Canter's Deli, a few block up the street.

Angelo's Italian Deli

Angelo's Italian Deli
190 La Verne Ave
Long Beach
562-434-1977

A small deli in Belmont Shores, Angelo's is known for their torpedo sandwich. Parking is a bit tough and there are two tables outside, but Angelo's is mostly a take out location.

I got the large torpedo, $8.99, provolone cheese, capicollo ham, genoa salami, mortadella, garlic sauce, romaine lettuce, tomato, and red onions. I hate olive oil and balsamic vinegar, so I didn't get those two items on the sandwich. The torpedo comes on a baguette, that was hard on the outside, but had a nice texture and chewiness on the inside. I would prefer a soften crust but overall I did like the baguette. All the meats were fresh and tasty but there was only a thin layer on the sandwich. Not what I expect when paying almost $9 for the sandwich. The romaine lettuce was a nice touch, adding a different texture than iceberg lettuce. But the red onions just overpowered the sandwich. Next time I would ask for no onions.

Service was OK. The sandwiches are made to order and came pretty quick. But if you want to use a credit card, they do an illegal thing, by forcing people to spend a $10 minimum. I know this because even though I paid with cash, the customer in front of me tried to use his credit card for an order less than $10.

I think the sandwiches are overpriced at Angelo's. Yes they use good quality meats but they don't put enough of the meats on the sandwich. I wouldn't go back to Angelo's

Nate n Al Deli

Nate n Al Deli
414 N Beverly Dr
Beverly Hills
310-274-0101

LA has many delis. Some people think there are more delis in LA than in New York City. The New Diner has reviewed many deli's in LA including, Billy's, in Glendale, Brent's Deli, in Northridge, Langers, in downtown LA, Art's, in Studio City, and my personal favorite, Canter's.

I found another deli in Beverly Hills, Nate n Al. So I decided to give it a try and see how it compares to other delis on LA. When I arrived I saw a long wait and I didn't want to spend anymore time around the pretentious assholes of Beverly Hills, so I got an order to go. I got the #11 combination sandwich, corned beef and pastrami with swiss cheese, $15.50. The sandwich is suppose to come with Russian dressing and cole slaw but I asked for both on the side.

After I got the sandwich, I found a place to sit down and took the pictures you see. I tried a third of the sandwich and found the corned beef to be dry and pretty salty. The pastrami was pretty good, nice seasoning and flavor. Both meats were pretty lean. The rye bread was pretty good. A nice firm crust, dense bread. The swiss cheese had a nice nutty flavor, though they could have put one side at the top and bottom of the sandwich, instead of doubling up at the top.

The Russian dressing was awesome. A more mild, less tangy flavor, which is a plus in my book. Maybe the best Russian dressing I ever had.

Service was pretty good. I walked in and people were nice and friendly. When I found out how long the wait was, one of the servers told me where to go to place a take out order. The guy who took my order was nice until it came time to pay. He finished preparing my order and asked "Would that be cash or credit?" No mention of the total, nothing. I mean I know this is Beverly Hills and every pretentious jerk has tons of money, but even they want to know the total for an order.

Also the way he made the sandwich was bad. One third of the sandwich did not have the bottom part of bread. It was almost as though he threw everything in the container. Now people may say I had a to go order and maybe taking the sandwich out of the container to take a picture was the problem. No it wasn't. The container is a clear plastic container and when I looked at the bottom of the container, I saw no bread on the bottom on one of the thirds. I also only took the sandwich about two stores down from Nate n Al, right by a nice waterfall.

I thought parking would be tough but I found out you can park at the Crate and Barrel parking structure, for 2 hours free. Canters is still my favorite deli in LA. Nate n Al doesn't come close to Canters. There is no reason for me to go back to Nate n Al again.

Art's Delicatessen & Restaurant

Art's Delicatessen & Restaurant
12224 Ventura Blvd
Studio City
818-762-1221

I was in the mood for a deli sandwich. Recently, I heard about Art's Deli for the first time, even though the sign in Art's window says they are 52 years old!!! Meaning that they opened up one year before that drunk Mick, stole the Brooklyn Dodgers from their rightful place. Yes, in all the time I have been doing The New Diner, I have not heard about Art's at all! Sure I heard and reviewed Brent's Deli and I did enjoy the sandwiches. But once somebody told me about Art's I decided to go on Veterans Day.

It should be clear, to readers of The New Diner, that I have the utmost respect for the men and women in our military. Personally I could care less what anybody's opinion about the War on Terror maybe, you have that right to disagree with the war. But what you gutless cowards forget is that you have that right, that freedom because of all the brave men and women in the military. So because of what they do, nobody should ever say anything bad about the brave men and women who are in our military. There is a very special person, who I went to high school with, who has been in the Army since a year after we graduated from high school. So this is personal, when somebody says anything bad about the people in the military, they are saying something bad about her and I will not put up with it.

But it does seem to me that for everything the men and women in the military do and have done for us, having one day to honor them, just doesn't seem to be enough!!

I got half a pastrami and corned beef sandwich, $12.50. I asked the server what is the difference between a half and whole sandwich, she said there is 5oz of meat on the half sandwich and 8oz of meat on the whole sandwich!! I wasn't too hungry and thought $15.50, was a bit pricey for a whole sandwich.

When the sandwich arrived, I was very impressed!!! It was very much like a lot of New York deli's I have been to, Katz's Deli where they stack the meat high on the plate. The quality of meat was very good, even better than Brent's Deli. The corned beef was moist, tender, and full of flavor. The pastrami was awesome, better than the pastrami at Langers. The pastrami was moist, tender, very little fat, well cured, and just so good. The difference is that Langers cuts their pastrami much thicker than other delis. But Art's pastrami is much better. The rye bread was good. Soft and chewy and tough, crunchy crust. The crust wasn't hard as a rock like Langers.

Service was below average. The server was OK but I noticed I didn't get something that other tables got. Other tables got a plate of pickles, I didn't get any pickles. Another server asked me if I wanted a refill on my water, my server. The place wasn't crowded at all. About 10 tables and three servers. So what the hell the server was doing, I have no idea. I will say she was nice.

What was bad was the host. I walked into Art's and there were three young, teenagers at the registers. None of them even said HI, they were too busy talking to each other. I wait there hoping somebody says something to me until I finally said should I seat myself or what? The young girl said "No, I'll seat you." Then get to work stupid. This is just terrible. All three have to be blind or just stupid not to see me. I shouldn't have to ask if I should seat myself. When I got up to pay my bill, the young guy didn't say anything. Even at Denny's they ask "How was everything?" Not here at Art's!!! Terrible.

Overall, I thought the food at Art's was pretty good. But the sandwiches, while they were piled high with good quality meats, were pricey!!! So when you combine high prices with the terrible service, I see no reason to come back.

Benjies

Benjies
1828 N. Tustin Ave
Santa Ana, CA 92705
714-541-6263

Among the many things lacking in the OC is a good New York style deli. It sure as hell isn't the Katella Deli and after my trip to Benjies, I am still searching for a good New York style deli in the OC. Some idiots on Yelp think Benjies is a Kosher deli but it is NOT a kosher deli since it serves cheeseburgers and sandwiches with meat and cheese.

Anyways I ordered the #5 triple decker; corned beef, pastrami, and swiss cheese on rye bread, $11.50 and comes with fries. The sandwich was cut into thirds, piled pretty high and came hot. But the cutting the sandwich into thirds, may make it seem as though the sandwich is big, the sandwich is smaller than other delis I've been to.

But the quality of the meat wasn't that good. Both the corned beef and pastrami was dry and very salty. And I know that both pastrami and corned beef are made from the brisket, which has a lot of fat, it was too fatty for me. The rye bread was standard, nothing special.

The fries were crinkle cut fries of the frozen variety. Again nothing special.

Service was pretty good but our server was gone for a long period of time.

Benjies is better than Katella Deli but that is like saying you're the tallest midget. No reason for me to come back here.

Roscoe's Famous Deli

Roscoe's Famous Deli
14700 Pipeline Ave
Chino Hills
909-597-3304

No this isn't Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles. I believe Roscoe's Famous Deli is owned by the same owners as Heroes in Fullerton and Heroes in Claremont. I love deli food and was excited to learn that a deli opened in Chino Hills. But sadly this deli is lacking in quality sanwiches.

I got the SoCo sandwich, hot pastrami and hot corned beef with swiss cheese, $9.95 and curly fries. The SoCo sandwich should tell you that Roscoe's isn't a kosher deli, since no kosher deli would serve a sandwich with meat and cheese. The sandwich was among the saltiest sandwiches I ever had. I must have finished a liter of water, trying to down this sandwich.

The corned beef and pastrami were luke warm, sliced thin and stacked high. But both meats were so salty. Not sure why? They use a good quality Vienna meat. It shouldn't be this salty.

Service was pretty good. Like Hero's, a different server may take your order and deliver your food. The young lady who took our order was nice and friendly but she didn't know the menu too well. I saw they had a bunch of bottled sodas and asked what kind of root beer the had, she had to go to the cooler, where the bottles were stored, to tell me what type of root beer. It's not a big deal but they should know what they carry. But she was lacking in refilling drinks. Now the drinks, both water and fountain soda, come in 64oz mugs!! So servers don't need to always come by but they should keep an eye out for it. The young guy who brought us our food, was nice and helpful. He got us water and napkins.

I wouldn't go back to Roscoe's again. The prices are good. The portions are huge. But the quality of meat is below average and just way too salty.

Dante's Italian Deli-Closed

Dante's Italian Deli
958 N Diamond Bar Blvd
Diamond Bar, CA 91765
909-860-3661

After reading about Dante's Italian Deli on Mother May I I knew there was something familiar about this place. Then I realized it used to be Giuseppe's Italian Deli. They current owners bought Giuseppe's about two years ago and changed the name to Dante's.

From Mother May I I learned that between 2-5pm all sandwiches and pizza are half off!! But be careful, there are no signs, at least from what I could see, for this half off special. So make sure you ask for that the special is still valid. I decided to try Dante's.

I got the small Italian ($5.75) and Grilled Chicken ($6.25). The total with $7.11 for both sandwiches. Not sure how they got $7.11, now that I think about. Half of $12 should be $6 and even with tax, it should still be under $7, though I am reading off their to go menu and maybe it wasn't updated? Mother May I paid $6.99 for the same two sandwiches and that is high since tax on $6 would be about 60 cents.

The Italian comes with salami, mortadella, coppacola, ham provolne cheese. I asked for mayo instead of Italian dressing and lettuce and tomatoes. I'm not a big fan of Italian sandwiches because they all taste like baloney to me, and I hate baloney. But they use good quality meats, Boar's Head, and this sandwich was very fresh. I loved the firm chewy texture of the bread. A much better bread than what Giuseppe used. I was impressed with this sandwich.

The Grilled Chicken comes with mozzarella, tomato, and a roasted garlic herb spread. They cooked this to order so expect a few minutes wait. The chicken is bland and lacks flavor. But they give you a ton of chicken. The bread, with the same chewy firm texture, held up well to the moisture of the sandwich. I wouldn't order this again.

Service is good.

I think the prices here are high and even at half priced I don't think it is worth it. Yes, the use good quality meats but other delis use as good, if not better quality meats and they don't charge as much.

I may come back every once in awhile but I wouldn't rush back here.

Fresh-Closed

Fresh
3425 Pomona Blvd
Pomona
909-859-8992

After going to Ginza, I noticed that Fresh was next door. Fresh is a sandwich shop and between 2-5pm everyday all cold sandwiches are $3.50. So I decide to drop in for a roast beef, turkey, and cheese sandwich on multi-grain dark bread, $3.50, happy hour price, $4.99 regular price. When you get to the counter, there are slips of paper where you write what you want on your sandwich.

The bread was very interest, a cross between squaw bread and a french roll. It was very good, not as sweet as squaw but fresh baked and a nice texture.

The meats were about Subway quality. Not the best but good. But the meats are also sliced really thin, which isn't a good thing when the bread is thick. They could put more meat on the sandwiches.

Service is good. The lady is very nice and friendly.

I think for the $3.50 price, the sandwich is a good value. At the regular $4.99 price, I think it is overpriced.

Katella Deli

Katella Deli
4470 Katella Ave
Los Alamitos
562-594-8611

I thought I found an actual deli without having to make the long drive to Canter's Deli. But Katella Deli is a very average deli located near the Los Alamitos race track.

I got their Bronx Delight, hot corned beef, hot pastrami, salami, swiss cheese and Russian Dressing on rye bread, $10.50. I hate salami and ordered turkey instead, maybe not the best combination but that's what I wanted.

The sandwich arrived quickly. But the hot meats, corned beef and pastrami were not hot, more like luke warm. Both the corned beef and pastrami were pretty bland and they seemed like low quality meats. No boarshead meats served here.

The turkey was cold and dry. I wish they put the Russiona dressing on the turkey part of the sandwich.

I was impressed with the amount of meat on the sandwich but no the quality.

Service was good. But I sat at the counter and most of the servers speak with a heavy Spanish accent. One older white lady, was a real bitch to the other servers and cooks. One time she asked for something from the cooks and in a very nasty way, repeated the request, in a tone that could only be taken as, Learn to speak English.
But my server was fine, even though she had to ask the manager if I could get turkey instead of salami.
