Frisco's-Closed

Frisco's
18065 Gale Ave
Industry
626-913-3663

Frisco's is a popular bar and grill. It is a 1950's diner style restaurant, with waitresses in roller skates. This location has been here for as long as I can remember.

There have a burger combo special, with fries and a drink, $4.95. I had them put cheddar cheese for $5.70. The burger is a half pound burger with lettuce, tomatoes and onions. The burger was served warm, not hot. The burger is fresh ground beef, not a frozen pattie but they put way too much salt on the burger, very very salty. But the burger was lacking flavor. Just too bland and salty. The bun wasn't toasted but was find. The lettuce and tomatoes were fresh. Overall there was nothing special about this burger. It is a great deal but nothing else.

The fries, which I asked to be well done, were also served warm. I ask for well done fries so I can get fresh hot fries, not fries that have been sitting under heat lamps forever.

Service was below average. The server was nice but I never got any silverware, not that I really needed any silverware. She didn't come by my table other than to take and deliver my order. She was more concerned about other tables than mine. I think she took the attitude that I only order the $6 special and her tip wasn't going to that much. Her attitude should be if I provide good service, I my get this customer to come back and order something else on the menu.

I think Frisco's appeals to people's sense of nostalgia but the food is average and server is below average. Not a good combination. There is no reason for me to go back to Frisco's.

Home-Closed

Home Restaurant
2500 Riverside Dr
Los Angeles
323-665-0211

Home, What an interesting name for a restaurant. Located just down the hill from the DUMP, Dodger Stadium, Home has a huge menu, a full bar and serves breakfast the whole day.

I ordered the All American breakfast, $7.95, two pancakes, two pieces of bacon, and two eggs, I asked for over medium. The bacon was very good. Lots of smokey flavor, not too much fat, the right mixture of crispy and chewy. The pancakes were light, fluffy and good size. I asked for over medium and I got over easy eggs. I hate over easy eggs because I hate runny yolk. over medium means the yolk is almost fulled cooked. It sure as hell isn't runny.

Service for our group of about 20 people was good. We didn't lack for anything and we got our food quickly.

I would go back to Home, but I would either not order eggs over medium or ask for eggs over hard, maybe that way they will cook the yolk. But I found the food to good and fresh and worth the price.

Park Pantry

Park Pantry
2104 E Broadway
Long Beach
562-434-0451

I've heard that Park Pantry is known for their breakfast menu. But I was in the area and wanted something to eat. This is a diner style place. Nothing fancy, just good comfort food. Well maybe not the cheeseburger.

I got the double cheddar cheeseburger, $9.50, with fresh fruit. The burger comes with grilled onions, pickles and 1000 Island dressing. This was a very greasy burger. I picked off the onions and my fingers could have greased every squeaky wheel on the block. The meat was big but pretty flavorless, not seasoning, nothing. You got a lot of burger for your money but the quality just wasn't there. I don't think even adding A-1 steaksauce would improve the burger.

Service was very good. The server was attentive, I never had to ask for anything, and friendly.

I may go back to Park Pantry for their breakfast or other items. But I would stay away from their burgers.

Crosstown Diner

Crosstown Diner
2880 Bruckner Blvd
Bronx
718-597-3450

After taking the redeye from LA to NY and getting about two hours sleep, we went to the Crosstown Diner for breakfast. Sorry for the lack of a picture of the restaurant.

I ordered two eggs and bacon, with home fries, and toast for $5. Now that's a great price anywhere. But the eggs, which I ordered over hard, were too well done. I hate all this brown stuff on eggs. Yes the yolk was cook and not running but the egg white should be fairly white, not brown. The bacon was terrible, it must have been sitting under heat lamps for a long time. The home fries were decent but I didn't finish them.

Service was pretty good. Our server was attentive but she had a New York attitude. She wasn't exactly friendly but she wasn't exactly a bitch either.

I wouldn't go back to the Crosstown Diner for breakfast. Yes, the prices are great but the food isn't good, so why waste money?

Bernie's-Closed

Bernie's
1299 S. Harbor Blvd
La Habra, CA 90631
714-525-2186

In front of Great Wall Mongolian BBQ is Bernie's. This location is the third location for Bernie's. They used to be on Beach Blvd. in Buena Park but were displaced by the 5 freeway. Then they moved to Beach and Commonwealth in Buena Park and then they moved to La Habra about a month ago.

A nice, clean, comfortable diner type restaurant. I ordered the pastrami burger with wet fries. When I ordered the pastrami burger I asked that no onions and pickles on the burger. The waitress wrote down the request and went to put in the order. The order comes up and there are problems. I get the pastrami sandwich and not the pastrami burger, even after I went through the trouble of asking for no pickles and onions on the burger. The waitress took the order back and got the right order.

The pastrami burger as you can see is very big. Always a plus. The patties was juicy and flavorful. I thought the pastrami had a little too much fat but otherwise is fine. I did like the burger and the price is right at $6.75. The fries was a little undercooked and the gravy was your typical gravy from a box.

The food is good here and I would come back. The prices are almost all under $10 and they do give you a lot of food. Other than the waitress messing up my order she was attentive and I didn't lack for anything during the meal.

I would like to come back for breakfast but hopefully better service. I don't want my eggs scrambled when I ordered eggs over hard. But I'm willing to give them another try.

Interesting note, their take out menu doesn't have their address.
