I never realized that a few blocks north of Jay Bees BBQ on Avalon Blvd., is Golden Bird Fried Chicken. I have reviewed two other Golden Bird locations, Golden Bird on Venice, and the Golden Bird in Inglewood, both are now closed.

Golden Bird in it's hey day, was one of the best fried chicken restaurants in the LA Area. But slowly Golden Birds closed down, leaving only a few locations left.

This Golden Bird location, is interesting because they have a ton of bottled soda for sale. They sell Bubble Up, Sioux City, and other smaller brands, at prices that rival, Galco Soda Shop.




I ordered two breast pieces, $5.90. Some people may wonder, why I only get chicken pieces, well I could care less about sides. I don't need to waste money on sides, I don't normally eat. Plus when I go to a fried chicken place, I'm most concerned about fried chicken. I mean, if a restaurants serves great fried chicken but average sides, are you will you stop going to that restaurant? Of course not, you would stop ordering the damn sides.

Anyways, the two breasts were huge, when I got the bag it was heavy. Always a good sign. The skin is much more crunchy, light, and airy than the other Golden Bird locations. The inside was moist but you could tell that this chicken was fried awhile ago, and had been sitting under heat lamps. And because of that, it was greasy, since all the oil had time to settle. While I was eating the chicken, I was thinking this would be great if fresh out of the fryer.

Service was good at the restaurant. Nice, helpful and friendly people. But when I called, the lady who answered the phone was rude and not helpful at all. I called because, I went on Easter Sunday. Well many businesses are closed on Easter, so I wanted to make sure Golden Bird was open, because I'm not wasting my time and money to drive down there for nothing.

I would go back to this Golden Bird location, because it has potential. If the chicken I had was right out of the fryer, I would say this was a great fried chicken. So hopefully the next time I go, I'll get chicken that has just came out of the fryer.

I found out about Hawkins House of Burgers because the have a Hawkins Special burger for $15.99. Three patties, two eggs, bacon, hot link, chili, pastrami, with a side of fries and a drink. I didn't come close to ordering that.

I did get a double cheeseburger, $4.64, mayo, mustard, lettuce and tomato. I wanted a bacon double cheeseburger, but more on that later. The burger was overcooked, lacked flavor, and wasn't worth the hype. The bun was over toasted. I had basically had croutons for a bun, and I hate croutons. The meat was flavorless. I had high hopes for this burger but it didn't even come close.

Service is terrible here. The lady, who took my order, is very nice. But she is clueless. I asked for a BACON double cheeseburger. I was charged for and got a double cheeseburger. Then when I took the burger back she wanted to charge my $1.25 for bacon. Now let's see the menu price for a double cheeseburger is $4.29. The menu price for a bacon double cheeseburger, is $4.99. Where does she get that $1.25 price? She should just charge my 70 cents more or put it on the house because she screwed up.

Then, it took 15 minutes to make this overrated burger!!!! I know the burgers are big but damn it shouldn't take that long to cook up a burger.

There is a small patio to eat, with a counter and long benches. When I went a drunk woman and a drunk man were talking loudly and smoking up a storm. Not exactly the best place to enjoy a burger but I wasn't going to drive around looking for a fast food place.

I would not go back to Hawkins House of Burgers again. The burgers are bad and the service is poor. Not a good combination.

Yes I know it may seem different for a church to serve BBQ but Prayer Assembly Church serves up BBQ every Fri and Saturday. Whether it's good BBQ is debatable.

Driving on El Segundo Blvd, just west of Alavon, you will see a very long line and smoke coming from the BBQ. I ordered the pork ribs dinner for $9.99 with beans and potato salad. The ribs can be on the dry side but have a good smoke flavor. A couple of the ribs I had were very tough on the outside, as though they were on the smoker a little too long. As you can see they give you a ton of ribs. The sauce is on the sweet side and adds little to the taste of the meat. The beans are good and the potato salad is one of the better potatoe salads around.

Besides the tough and dry ribs, the line can be very long and slow. I must have waited 45 minutes in line before I placed an order. There are so many better BBQ places close by that I wouldn't return.
