Umami Burger-La Brea-Closed

Umami Burger
850 S La Brea Ave
Los Angeles
323-931-3000

I went to the Umami Burger in Hollywood but I wanted to try the original location on La Brea to see if there was any difference.

I go the Port and Stilton burger, $9, with blue cheese and pocas port-caramelized onions. The burgers at Umami aren't cooked enough for me. This burger is cooked too rare for my tastes, I don't want my plate to be covered with blood. The blue cheese mixed in with the meat and there is a small amount of caramelized onions. The burger was a decent size but worth $9? Not at all.

I will give Umami Burger props for having Coke made in Mexico, $3 a bottle. Anybody who says Coke made with that crappy HFCS, is out of their damn mind. Coke made with real sugar tastes so much better!!!

Service is good. I wasn't lacking for anything.

Umami wants to be the fifth taste, which is savory. I don't think their burgers are savory. Umami has opened a third location on Cahuenga. The La Brea doesn't have the smash burger, which I think is the best burger. I would only go back to Umami for a $5 smash burger.

Berth 55 Fish Market and Seafood Deli

Berth 55 Fish Market and Seafood Deli
555 Pico Ave
Long Beach
562-435-8366

I had been meaning to go to Berth 55 but just really didn't have the chance. But I thought I would take advantage of no traffic during the Thanksgiving weekend and gave Berth 55 a try. I know I have been in Long Beach a lot recently but I was having dinner with the hottie at Lucille's BBQ and then trying Buono's Authentic Pizzaria that she told me recommended, and since Berth 55 closes at 6pm everyday, it would be tough to make it there before they close during a non holiday week.

When I'm having fried fish and shrimp, I am always comparing places to England Fish and Chips. Berth is more like Fisherman's Outlet and Pan-Pacific Restaurant where they sell fresh seafood and fried seafood items. At Berth's they will cook fresh seafood for you, at a price, about $2 more than the raw price.

Anyways I got the fish and shrimp plate, $7.10, that came with fries. They use a good quality fish, red snapper but the portions are small, I bet both pieces didn't weigh half of the cod from England Fish and Chips. The fish was warm, not hot, so it was sitting under a warming lamp. England Fish and Chips are cooked to order. The batter had a decent crunch but nothing good. The red snapper was pretty moist and flavorful.

The plate came with five small pieces of shrimp. The shrimp were warm, again not cooking to order but sitting under heat lamps.

Service is good. The guy at the register is nice and helpful.

Compared to England Fish and Chips, Berth 55 doesn't compare. Compared to Pan-Pacific Restaurant and Fisherman's Outlet, Berth 55 is about the same; decent prices, small portion, food that sits under heat lamps. I wouldn't make a special trip to any of them and would pick another place before going back. But if I was in the area, I may go back.

Buono's Authentic Pizzaria

Buono's Authentic Pizzaria
401 W Willow St
Long Beach
562-595-6138

While having dinner with the hottie last night at Lucille's BBQ, she talked about the great pizza at Buono's Authentic Pizzaria. So I decided to give the Buono's on Willow a try, they have another location on Ocean in Long Beach and the original location in San Pedro. This isn't too far from England Fish and Chips. Would fish and chips and pizza go together?

Honestly I don't think of Long Beach as a great pizza place. I have reviewed a places in Long Beach like diPiazzas, Z Pizza, Ristorante daVinci, a couple places on the Stroll and Savor, and Smooth's Sports Grille, but all of them have been average at best.

I had a coupon, from Buono's website, for a two topping medium pizza for, $11.49, with tax the total came to, $12.61; regular price $13.49. I got pepperoni and Canadian bacon. This was a fairly big pizza for a medium sized, 12 inches, with a medium crust with lots of cheese and toppings. They don't cheat you with amount of toppings and cheese at Buono's. I thought the pepperoni was pretty salty. I did like the Canadian bacon side though. There was a lot of cheese and well cooked Canadian bacon. Good stuff.

Service was pretty good. The young guy taking my order was nice and friendly. Buono's has about eight booths and the back room has another 6-8 tables.

Buono's is one of the better pizza places in Long Beach. Though I wasn't impressed with the pepperoni, I would go back and order other toppings. Even without the coupon, the prices are pretty good. I debated about creating a link for Buono's website but I haven't created links to other restaurants websites, so I didn't want to start now. I doesn't take much for people to do their own search and typing in Buono's Long Beach and finding their website site.

Lucille's BBQ-Long Beach

Lucille's BBQ-Long Beach
4828 E 2nd St
Long Beach
562-434-7427

I know I said I wasn't impressed with the Lucille's BBQ in Brea. But the hottie I went to Famous Dave's Pitt BBQ and Jaybee's BBQ with, wanted to try Lucille's BBQ in Long Beach. So we went to the 2nd St. location.

As with many other restaurants in these tough economic times, Lucille's BBQ has a special menu. They are offering smaller portions Sun-Thr. from 4pm until close. I wasn't that hungry and I wanted to try something different than their terrible spare ribs. So I got the spare ribs and tri tip combo, $12.95, with mac and cheese.

The ribs were again terrible, almost burnt, no smoke flavor, small, fatty. They just don't do a good job on spare ribs. But the tri tip was great. Well smoked, tender, flavorful, and just wonderful.

The mac and cheese was ok but tasted too much like a massed produced item, maybe even from a box. Nothing special about this.

Service was good. Our server was nice and friendly and we got our food quickly.

I wouldn't go back to Lucille's BBQ unless the hottie wants to go back. Even though the tri tip was great, I go for good spare ribs and I have never gotten good spare ribs from any Lucille's.

Coke Free Style-Fullerton

Coke Free Style Machine at Subway
2514 E Chapman Ave
Fullerton
714-446-0591

As many of you know I did a review of the Coke Free Style machine at Carl's Jr. But the machine was silver at Carl's and to me Coke means that bright red logo. So when I found this Subway has a red Free Style Machine, I wanted to do a review.

This Subway is opened 24 hours. The soda cost me $1.62 and I made good use of all the flavors that Coke offers. You push the lever for ice, then using the touch screen you select what you want; Coke, Sprite, Dansani Water, Powerade, etc. Then press the pour button and you get nice refreshing Coke product.

I again got the Lime Coke because I like the crisp finish.

But this time I tried the flavored Sprite. Raspberry Sprite was pretty good, a bit too sweet. Strawberry Sprite; basically strawberry soda.

Again, I think this Coke Free Style machine is awesome. It gives people a bunch of flavor choices for their sodas. The fact that you can get 100 different types of Coke products, 24 hours a day is awesome!!!

McConnell Bistro

I found out about McConnell Bistro, the dining at Pitzer College, after reading David Allen's review. To be honest I was surprised that "dorm" food could be gourmet. But further research revealed that the chef at McConnell Bistro was a sous chef at a few 4-5 star restaurants in New York City and all the food in the dining hall is made from scratch, the chef works for the Bon Appetit, a food's services company. So Pitzer College has contracted out their dining services. They made a great choice.

McConnell Bistro is on the campus of Pitzer College, which is part of the Claremont Colleges. McConnell is No. 9, on 9th Street on this Pitzer College Map. Since McConnell Bistro is a college dining hall they are catering to the students needs and hours. So I doubt they are going to be open much during summer and around school holidays. Take a look at McConnell Bistro hours to make sure they fit into your plans. But the public is welcomed to enjoy the great food. Just don't expect a lot of non students when you go. Though I do wish they would stay open for dinner a bit longer on weekends.

The menu at changes daily but usually Sundays are steak night!!! Again the public is welcomed to enjoy dinner, cost is $8!!! Yes, for only $8, you got an all you can eat meal, made from scratch by a well trained chef and his staff. This is the best deal you will see!!!

The Bistro is set up with a greens station; fresh salad, cold cuts, and cheeses.

A sweets station, cookies, pies, cakes, and brownies.

Options area, which was had Mexican items, the night I went. I heard this changes daily. Monday night is Mongolian BBQ, and Tuesday night is Taco Tuesday, where they make their own tortillas, and Friday nights are vegetarian night.

Market Grill has made to order burgers, chicken sandwiches, onion rings, hot dogs, chicken tenders, grilled cheese sandwiches, bratwurst, and quesadillas.

Main Plate which is your entrees and sides.

Steamed broccoli and onion rings. The broccoli was in the Main Plate area. The broccoli was cooked a bit too crispy for me but was well seasoned and fresh. The onion rings were very good!! There was a hint of root beer in the batter. Crispy and with thick cut pieces of onions. My only issue with the onion rings were they were only warm. The onion rings right out of the fryer, would be the best onion rings anywhere!!!

I got a burger and a chicken sandwich from the Market Grill. You fill out the slip of paper with what kind of sandwich or burger you want. Then check the toppings you want. You can then either wait for your sandwich or come back for your sandwich. The chicken sandwich was made of fresh chicken breast. I asked for cheese, lettuce, tomato and special sauce which is a thousand island style sauce. The sandwich was very tasty. A bit small but I understand why they make it small, since this is an all you can eat dining hall, most people aren't only going to eat a sandwich.

The burger with bacon, cheddar cheese, lettuce and tomato was cooked to about medium rare, fresh and tasted great; juice, good flavor. There are condiments on the tables if you want to add ketchup, mustard etc.

Now onto the Main Plate. The main entree was steak, mushrooms, and mac and cheese. But there was also freshly made gourmet pizza. The steak, I think a sirloin cut, select grade, was flavorful, tender, and cooked just right, medium rare. The steak was seasoned with garlic and ginger. This is very well made steak.

The mushrooms was a perfect side to the steak. Fresh, full of flavor, in a light sauce, more than likely the au jus of the steak.

The mac and cheese was so creamy and rich. This isn't from some damn box. The cheese sauce was perfectly mixed into the perfectly cooked macaroni. Topped with bread crumbs, this is a winning combo.

A treat for me was the gourmet ice machine!!! The had two flavors, lime and mango. The lime was just OK. Nothing special. But the mango flavor was great. A ton of mango flavor, nice and refreshing even when it is 55 degrees outside. I also love the fact that they server Coke, not third rate cola.

I loved the oatmeal raisin cookie. Lots of raisins, cinnamon, not too sweet.

Service is good. The lady taking my money was nice and friendly. She answered all my questions. The staff at Options, Main Plate, and Market Grill were quick and helpful. The food is always hot and fresh and once the food runs out, it is quickly refilled. Since there are a lot of students the food has a high turnover rate, always a plus at a buffet.

But as I was taking pictures one staff member came up to me and asked if I needed any help. I know it is weird to have somebody taking pictures but I don't see why he is asking. I wasn't bothering anybody. He wasn't a jerk about it. But still, why bother?

Of course it maybe a bit uncomfortable eating dinner with a bunch of snotty rich kids but I have no reason to talk to them. And they are so into their own world, they won't even notice somebody who isn't part of their small world.

My memories of dorm food is mashed potatoes made from a box, mystery meat burgers and entrees. It is nice to see that some schools now care about the food they are serving their students. Students, ok their parents, who are paying a good amount of money for that food. Who knows maybe all the whining about terrible dorm food, back then got school's to improve the dorm food offerings.

I would have no issues going back to McConnell Bistro again. Well one issue is parking. There are a lot of parking for students and faculty but not much for visitors. I parked on College Blvd and 9th Street and walked to McConnell. 9th Street doesn't continue east from College Blvd. Again, I understand parking is set up for students but they could have a little more parking for visitors.

But the food is great and you can't beat the price. Don't worry about sitting with a bunch of snotty rich kids. Ok, ok I'm being a bit hard on those kids. Seriously though, give McConnell Bistro a try. You will change your mind about "dorm" food, after your first bite.

Update Dec 6, 2009

I went back to McConnell Bistro on a Friday night dinner, $8, for their vegetarian night. I am not a vegetarian but I told a few friends about McConnell and they wanted to give McConnell a try. I was expecting nothing but veggies but they had a chicken item, pizza, egg rolls, and beef enchiladas and of course their Market Grill for chicken sandwiches and burgers.

The last time I went I didn't try their soup. But it has finally felt like winter and it was a bit colder than normal so I looked at what soups they offered. When I saw clam chowder I was all over it. DAMN, this was so good. The clam chowder was a lot thinner than I'm used to but it had so much flavor!!! Tons and tons of clams and very little potatoes. Such a rich hearty flavor and hit the spot on a cold night.

I also didn't try their salad bar so I made sure to give it a try. I got romaine lettuce topped with cucumbers, mushrooms and carrots with ranch dressing. All very fresh and tasty.

Next up was the cheese pizza and oh gratin potatoes. The pizza was covered with cheese and had a good flavor but I didn't care for the crust. If you combined the crust from Los Olivos at Cal Poly Pomona and the pizza sauce and toppings from McConnell you would have a damn good pizza.

The oh gratin potatoes were nice nicely mixed with a mild tasting cheese. The red potatoes were cut into big ovals and just covered with that cheese. Nice and relatively light.

Next up was the BBQ tofu and garlic asparagus. The tofu was pan fried then covered in BBQ sauce. The sauce would be great on ribs!!! The outside of the tofu had a tough texture and the inside was mushy. I didn't care for this.

The asparagus was great. They were crunchy, which some people may not like, but I do and had a good garlic flavor. A very healthy dish!!

Next I got the all beef hot dog with bacon. Now the hot dog wasn't good. It was overcooked, no snap, and pretty bland. But to give McConnell the benefit of the doubt, I did place my order with them and then went back to my seat and ate something else. So the hot dog may have been sitting there for a long time. I wanted to try as many things as possible so I didn't go back for another hot dog.

The egg rolls and chicken sandwich were up next. I got bacon, cheddar cheese, lettuce and tomatoes on the chicken sandwich. Perfectly grilled chicken breast, melted cheese, fresh toppings. A great chicken sandwich!! The egg rolls had cabbage, carrots and maybe some broccoli and were dry fried. Nice, crispy and huge!!!

The meat entree was a garlic chicken. I got the chicken breast and I found it to be dry. Nice flavor but I needed some gravy to moisten it up. I wouldn't go back for seconds on this chicken.

Since it was Friday the dining room was pretty empty; I didn't see as many snotty rich kids as I did on my first visit.

Service was pretty good. I know Friday dinners are tough to prepare for since kids leave campus or go out to eat. They don't want to cook too much food and let it go to waste. But the food was quickly refilled when the serving stations were empty. But that wasn't the case for forks and knives. I had to ask the lady who was refilling the salad bar that they were out of forks at both stations!!

I also was a bit put off by the cashier. The first time I went the cashier was very nice. The cashier on Friday was a bit standoffish. The weird thing was I gave her a $10 bill and she gave me back a dollar bill and four quarters in change. I saw her register and saw she had a lot of bills. Why she gave me four quarters is beyond me. At first when I saw her reaching for the quarters, I thought maybe the price went back to $8.50. But no the price was the same. So why did she give me quarters? Now this isn't a big deal or deal breaker but come on, you have a ton of dollar bills, no need to give me quarters.

Honestly if vegetarian night was my first dining experience at McConnell, I wouldn't have given a glowing review, like I did for steak night. I would say overall it was good but nothing great. The clam chowder and asparagus were the only two items that I thought was great. But nothing else totally wowed me like everything on steak night.

I wouldn't go back for dinner on Friday but have no problem returning for dinner on Sunday.

AJ's BBQ Pit-Closed

AJ's BBQ Pit
3691 E. 3rd. St
Los Angeles
323-263-7427

A BBQ restaurant in East LA? Yes, in the land of great Mexican food, you have a BBQ restaurant!!! AJ's is about a block east of the Indiana Station of the new Gold Line Eastside extension. AJ's is easy to recognize because of the flames painted on the outside of the restaurant.

I went to AJ's earlier this week but they were out of ribs!!! Then last night I called and asked if they had ribs, they again were out of ribs. I asked are you going to have ribs tomorrow during lunch. She said yes. Then asked me my name, so they can give me a discount when I came. Well I called and asked if they had ribs. They said Yes. I asked if I got there in about an hour, will they still have ribs, they said yes. So I went.

I ordered the third rack of St. Louis pork spare ribs, $7.80 and 5 piece order of chicken wings, $3.90. Those prices are the regular menu price. I got the 15% discount because the nice lady offered it to me for my trouble. I did not at one time mention I was doing a review.

AJ's is Santa Maria style bbq, where the meats are cooked over oak wood. This isn't "true" BBQ but it is damn good if done right. Take a look at this picture, this is how they do Santa Maria BBQ.

The ribs were pretty good. Nice smoke flavor, tender, little to no fat. But the ribs were so small!!!! The pit master came out and even said sorry for the ribs being so small.

The wings were bigger than the pork ribs!! The chicken wings were about a medium spice level. There wasn't much of a crispy skin but the meat was tender and moist. Overall I did like the wings but I would prefer them to be a bit more crispy.

Service was very good. The lady's who gave me the discount on the phone was super nice. She didn't have to offer any discount but she went over and above. Her daughter was nice, friendly and helpful taking the order. The pitmaster was nice to come out and say sorry for the size of the ribs. He also mentioned they bought some more ribs and put them on the grill, as you can see from the above picture.

AJ's has been open for about six months. They need to work some kinks in their operation. I understand not wanting food to go to waste but ribs are a staple of any BBQ restaurant. They need to have ribs all the time. I wouldn't have any issues going back to AJ's but I would call first to make sure they have ribs.

Carl's Jr-Coke Free Style-Closed

Carl's Jr
2025 E Katella Ave,
Anaheim
714-385-1504

Update April 19, 2010: This Carl's Jr is still open but they no longer have the Coke Free Style machine.

Why is The New Diner reviewing a Carl's Jr? I wanted an excuse for trying the new Coke Free Style machine!!! I first heard of the Coke Free Style machine on the CNBC special, hosted by Melissa Lee, who is pretty hot, called The Real Story about Coke and it's history. The showed talked about Coke's marketing practices, development and research and their awesome buying power. The Coke Free Style machines are being test marketed in selected locations in California and Atlanta. The Coke Free Style machine can give customers 100, yes 100, different varieties of Coke products!! Just press the right icons on the touch screen and out comes your Coke product. Inside the machines they have cartridges filled with flavor syrup, much like a printer cartridge, that combine with carbonated water to give you nice refreshing Coke product.

The Free Style machine maybe a little confusing at first. But really all you need to do is, get a cup, push the lever for ice, press the touchscreen for what type of soda you want and then press the POUR button. Out comes your a nice, cold refreshing Coke product.

One thing for damn sure, that nasty New Coke crap, doesn't come out of this. Why Coke would mess with perfection is beyond me!!!! Ok, let's forgot about those terrible 3-4 months back in 1985 where REAL Coke wasn't being sold.

I tried regular Coke, raspberry Coke, orange Coke and lime Coke. Regular Coke tasted like any other Coke from a fountain. Raspberry Coke was a bit too sweet for me. Lime Coke was nice and refreshing, with a nice finish. When I tried the Orange Coke, something must have been wrong with the machine, more than likely the Coke cartridge was out or giving an incorrect amount of Coke, because it tasted like orange soda, not Orange Coke.

I had a coupon which got you a free soda and fries with a purchase of a Chicken Parmesan sandwich, $4.34. The chicken parmesan sandwich was nicely breaded and moist. But the marinara sauce was too tangy and just didn't work well in the sandwich.

Service was good. The guy taking my order was nice and helpful.

I normally go to Carl's for the western bacon cheeseburger. But the main reason I went to Carl's was because I wanted to try the Coke Free Style machine. It was nice and the wave of the future. This is Coke Free Style's Facebook page for other locations.

Tomato Pie Pizza Joint

Tomato Pie Pizza Joint
2457 Hyperion Ave
Los Angeles
323-661-6474

I was in the Silverlake area for a wine tasting and thought about going back to Garage Pizza, but instead I decided to have a couple slices at Tomato Pie, since a friend raved about the pizza at Tomato Pie. . The location is really in the back part of the building. The front part is a beauty salon. Tomato Pie is mainly a take out place but there are some picnic tables outside.

I really didn't want a whole pie so I got a slice of cheese, $2.25, and a meat lover's slice, $3.00. The young lady said for 50 cents more I could get a soda, so for $5.75, two slices of pizza and a soda; not a bad deal.

The cheese slice wasn't good because there wasn't enough cheese on the slice. The crust, which was reheated, was crispy yet chewy on the inside. The cheese slice maybe good if they put more cheese on the slice and it was right out of the oven.

The meat lovers has pepperoni, American bacon, sausage, and ham. I only got maybe a piece or two of ham. But there were plenty of pepperoni, sausage and bacon. I was pretty impressed with this slice, not salty at all, flavorful, good quality toppings, though they could have put more ham on there, nice crust.

Service was very good. The young lady who took my order was nice, helpful, and friendly, even if she is a Mets fan. She did tell me they are going to expand into that beauty salon, soon.

For pizza in the Silverlake area, I still prefer Garage Pizza but I wouldn't have any issues going back to Tomato Pie, though I wouldn't have another slice of cheese pizza.
